Brooches are a big accessory for the fall. Fabric flowers are an easy and inexpensive way to dress up your wardrobe. And they are fun to make as well!

First cut eight 5" (12cm) squares and eight 3 ½" (8.5cm) squares from your fabric. You may want to use two different coordinating prints for the different sizes for a more interesting look.

Next fold one square in half to make a triangle.

Fold the triangle in half along the dotted line indicated in Fig.1. Open it back up with the outward edge of the crease facing you.

Figure 1

Look at Fig.2 and fold points A and B down to point C. You should end up with a square shape again. Keep those edges folded and re-fold it along the crease you made earlier in Fig.1. You will now have a small triangle as shown in Fig.3.

Figure 2 Figure 3

Place the cut edges at the bottom, or lower side, and there should be two folded edges on side A and three folded edges on side B. You will fold the A sides over to meet the B sides so that the edges all line up and you end up with five folded edges on side B.

You should have something that looks like Fig.4. Run your needle and thread through the spot indicated in red and clip off the lower area indicated in grey. You have just made your first petal!

Figure 4

Repeat that process for each of the squares you cut, sliding them onto your thread as you go. You should stagger the petals so that you have a smaller one in between each of the larger petals. After you've strung on all of your petals run the thread back through the first petal, pull the thread up fairly tight, knot it and clip the extra thread.

Cut a small circle of fabric large enough to cover the open area at the center of the flower. Using your needle and thread, hand stitch the circle to the back side of your brooch covering the center opening.

Sew the brooch clasp in place on the back of the brooch.

Use the craft glue to secure the button over the center hole on the front side of the brooch. Let the glue dry completely before you wear it.
