When we hear the words "granny square," most of us think afghans, but it's a versatile pattern that can be used in a lot of different ways. These cute and unusual Christmas stockings are a quick granny-square project that you can whip up easily in an evening, and they're sure to get rave reviews.

Ch 4, join with sl st to f6irst ch to form ring.

RND 1: Ch3, 2 dc in ring. Ch2, *3dc in ring, ch2. Repeat from * twice more. Sl st in top of ch3.

RND 2: Sl st in the first 2 dc's and in the first ch2 sp. Ch3, 2 dc in ch2 sp, ch2, work 3 dc in same sp. Work the following 3 times: (Ch1, 3 dc, ch2, 3 dc in next ch2 sp). Ch1, join with sl st to top of ch3.

RND 3: Sl st in the first 2 dc's and in the first ch2 sp. Ch3, 2 dc in ch 2sp, ch 2, work 3 dc in same sp. Ch1, work 3 dc in next ch1 sp. Ch1. Work the following 3 times: (3 dc, ch2, 3 dc in next ch2 sp. Ch1, work 3 dc in next ch1 sp. Ch1). Join with sl st to top of ch3.

RND 4: Same as RND 3, but work the following into each ch1 sp on each side of square: (Ch1, 3 dc, ch1).

Sl st in first 2 dc's and tie off, weaving ends into work.

Crochet 8 granny squares. Arrange the finished squares into two L-shapes, with the short end on the left side of one "L" and on the right side of the other. (Fig. 1)

Making sure that all squares are facing the same way, use the yarn needle to sew the squares of the L-shapes together with a whip stitch (you can make a nice effect by using a contrasting yarn for the stitching and/or crocheting a single-stitch border around each square or the entire stocking). (Fig. 2)

Put the two L-shapes together, with the backs of the squares to the inside, and sew together with a whip stitch (start at the top of the longest side and stitch around the entire stocking to the top of the shorter side leaving the top open).

Figure 2

If you like, you can single-crochet a cuff around the top of the stocking after it is stitched together. When adding a cuff, I think it looks better to use only 6 granny squares instead of 8, so that the stocking doesn't get too long and disproportionate-looking. (Fig. 3)

To hang, loop a bit of yarn through one of the stitches at the top left of the stocking. Put it up by your chimney and wait patiently for Santa to do his part!
