With email, instant messaging, and sms-ing, receiving hand-written letters is becoming less and less common. This project will give you an attractive place to store your stamps, which may encourage you to pick up a pen and let someone know you're thinking of them. The cross-stitch design on the top of the box was inspired by an antique postage stamp. Have fun stitching it up!

Fig B

When the cross-stitching is finished press it flat and trim the edges, leaving some extra fabric to turn under. Press the edges under and mitre the corners (fig. A).

Fig C

Remove the hinges and clasp from your box. Rather than painting the box directly I decided to use a wash. Dampen your rag or sponge, dip it in a small amount of paint and rub over the box in the direction of the wood grain (fig. B). If the paint looks too thick just put a bit more water on the rag. Let dry. I chose to paint the inside of the box with a more solid layer of the same paint. Use a brush and be sure to get into the corners. Let dry. Reattach the hinges and clasp.

Fig D

Cut a piece of felt to fit the inside dimensions of your box. Squirt some craft glue on the inside bottom of the box and use an old credit card to spread it thinly and evenly over the entire surface (fig. C). Carefully lay the felt in place and smooth it out (fig. D).

Fig E

Position the cross-stitched piece on top of the box. Use the pins as you would a nail and secure the cloth to the box top placing a pin every ½" (1cm) or so (fig. E). Fill the box with stamps, pens, and postcards so that you're always prepared when the thought of someone comes to mind.
