Fall is a great time to bring out the candles and create a cozy atmosphere. These candle shades will help you set whatever mood you're going for. And the best part is that they can easily be changed to suit your changing décor.
Start by removing the backs from all the frames. You can discard the cardboard backing and all the papers. Carefully set aside the glass.* Paint the frames as you wish. As they dry you can cut your pieces of paper/fabric to match the size of the glass. You want to use fairly thin paper so that the candle light can shine through it. On my 3-sided shade I used a wrapping paper and on the 4-sided shade I used a napkin.
Cut the dowels the same height as the frames you are using. I was able to cut mine with scissors; if yours are very thick you may need some type of saw.
When the frames are dry:
For a 4-sided shade you need to drill two small holes on each side of two of the frames about 1" (2.5cm) from the top and bottom edges. On the other two frames you need to drill the holes about 1 1/4" (3cm) from the top and bottom edges.
For a 3-sided shade drill the at the same measurements as above, but drill one side of the frames at 1" (2.5cm) and the other side of the frame at 1 1/4" (3cm).
Screw the eye screws into the drill holes.
Clean the pieces of glass. Lay one piece of glass in a frame. Place the paper/fabric on the glass with the right side facing the right side of the frame. Then lay the second piece of glass on top and secure in place.
When all the frames are ready you can stand them up and line up the eye screws so that the dowel can be fitted down through them. Set a tealight or votive candle (in an appropriate holder) inside the candle shade and light it. Sit back and enjoy the glow!
* Instead of having a second piece of glass cut to match, I just went to the dollar store and bought double the amount of frames I needed and used the glass from the extra frames.
