If you are liberal and have a partner who you can't say enough good things about or you are looking for love, this is the place to visit. Set in the middle of the mountains, you can smell the relaxation in the air. There are plenty of places to go if you are looking for gay friendly spots to cuddle or get hot and heavy on the dance floor.
Scandals: a wonderful bar where a weekly drag show is on schedule every Sunday night. Say hi to Coco, Chyna or Makala if they are performing. This bar hosted the Miss USA at Large pageant just this past year and is famous for their great atmosphere. More gay men hang out but lesbians are always welcome! Don't worry if you're straight, they like you too.
Laughing Seed Café: Wonderful, vegetarian and vegan friendly, this is a restaurant where you can cozy up with your one and only or chill out with the local hippies of Asheville. They are always there to please and the food rocks, even if you're a meat eater like me.
Tupelo Honey: A restaurant with vegan friendly menu and late night hours. The perfect place to spend an hour sobering up with the person you picked up at the bar. If you like good food served to you at three in the morning this is the place to go!
North Carolina Stage Company: This a place holds a special spot in my heart as I worked there for about a year and a half. The North Carolina Stage Company is the up and coming professional theatre company of Asheville. It has shows going on year round and supports many younger, smaller professional theatre companies in the area. It is also affiliated with Asheville Theatre for Youth Audiences and has summer programs for children.
Diana Worthem Theatre: This beautiful space is the largest auditorium in Asheville and is the host of Highland Rep Theatre. I would highly recommend looking them up and checking out what they have going on. This is another theatre I worked for, so say hi to Andy from me if you visit.
Pack your bags and get ready for hippies galore and liberal banter! This is a city buzzing about the stupidity of Bush (not affiliated) and arguing over world politics. You'll be sure to hear Bob Dylan and see dreadlocks. I love this town!
