I was making cookies and the recipe called for 2 1/4 cups of all-purpose flour, 1 cup finely chopped almonds and 1 cup of butter, among other things. I am 1/4 cup short of flour. I don't know what to do. Use bread flour? Add more nuts? Use less butter?

The guy loves to argue. I just wanted to sit there, drink cheap coffee out of a plastic cup, hear classical music, and get pampered a bit. But instead I had to discuss why I got a DSL modem instead of cable and whether I got the best price for it.

The phone kept ringing while I was trying to have my one day of sleeping in. When I finally dragged my butt out of bed to answer it, it turned out it was work trying to call me in for today. I told them I was sick.

Last week I registered on one of those genealogy sites where you can research your family tree. This weekend I got an e-mail from a man. He is my dad's cousin who no one knows existed.

With a colleague, I went to a cafe a couple of blocks from the office to get lunch. I was at the cash register and was absent-mindedly looking at the bad checks taped to the wall. There was a check from a woman I work with, written last year.

Just now, I bought two more pairs of shoes. Granted, they were on sale and one pair is to replace the Italian-made torture devices I had on my feet, but the other pair is just plain excessive. I can't go home now. My shoes and I are going to get thrown out.
