Creative Writing - Poetry - Heroes and Role Models
by Sarah Slaughter
Stooped little gnome
picking corn and cucumbers
her paper white hair
pulled back in a bun.
She digs up weeds
while rich raspberry pies
cool in the window.
Stubbornly refusing to move
in with someone else
She lives all alone
in her little old house.
She's never without the turquoise shawl
I crocheted three years ago
Her prized possession
since the loss of Fred
so many gardens ago.

Sarah grew up everywhere, being a military brat, and currently resides in Virginia. She graduated from Arizona State with a B.S. in Management, got married and then divorced. She is now partnered with a PhD candidate and they have two children, 3 cats, a dog, and a tank of fish, which, along with work, does not leave a lot of personal time. Sarah has been in retail for over 20 years and currently works for Michaels, but is looking to figure out what she wants to be when she grows up.
